Name: Vanessa Choot
Occupation(s): Founder & Editor of Modern Mix Vancouver
Who is your role model: My business mentor whom I met through the Vancouver Board of Trade Leaders of Tomorrow Program. I’ve known her for 4 years and she listens, asks the right questions and always gives great advice. Even though she has moved back to Toronto to be the Communications Manager at Sobeys, we still keep in touch.
What do you like most about your job: With Modern Mix Vancouver, I love being “in the know” about hotspots in the city. Oh – and I love product testing as well and giving my opinion on a plethora of beauty products.
Daily ritual: Floss teeth, wear moisturizer and walk my dog. (Not necessarily in that order.)
The most rewarding part of my job is: Seeing the page views go up for my blog and know that people are actually reading what myself and my writers have to say about Vancouver.
What has been your biggest strength that’s helped you succeed in your industry? Dedication. Anyone can start a blog, but it takes a lot of work to maintain it and keep it going.
Memorable celebrity encounter/interview: I’ve had the opportunity to meet several international DJs in the electronic music scene. The Dutch DJ Fedde le Grand (You may recognize his catchy club track “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit”) was the first DJ show I went to four years ago. Since then, I’ve gone to his club show every time he plays in Vancouver. I finally managed to get a photo with him the last time in was in Vancouver, after one of his shows.
Favourite quote: "...how we make our plans and how tempting it is to believe that if we can just find the right order to our words, our stories, if we can find the right order to our lives, the right relationship, the right body, the family, the career, if we can just put these elements into place, then, then, then... then there's that wind again..." - Laurie Wagner
Describe your personal style: I love neutral tones (my beige Marc Jacobs bag, my grey Aritzia peacoat, my black leggings) paired with a pop of colour – whether it’s my nails, a scarf or another accessory.
Dream vacation spot? I’m a city gal – I would love to go to New York again.
What is your favourite thing to take pictures of? I’ve been using Instagram a fair bit lately – it makes EVERYTHING look good.
What has been your favourite event to attend? I like attending media/blogger events for retail locations and finding out about what products they carry and their predictions for upcoming rends. I like how the products available at retail shops are accessible to myself and my readers. You read about something from a retail location on Modern Mix, you can actually go to the shop and purchase it.
Favourite Restaurant: There are so many to choose from in Vancouver. For a unique experience, I like Salt Tasting Room where it’s all about bread, cheese and meat pairings with wine. For weekend brunch, my favourite spot is Habit Lounge on Main Street. In fact, I recently started a “Weekend Bruch” series on Modern Mix Vancouver. Check it out here: ___ Other than that, my favourite business lunch spot is Glowbal in Yaletown.
What is your biggest indulgence? I like jelly beans a lot. One time at work, a media vendor gave me a piggy bank full of jellybeans and I ate the entire thing in a week.
If there was more time in the day you would: Go on vacation.
Favourite social network: Facebook. I currently see it as having the most business potential.
Favourite Blog: My own, of course – ModernMixVancouver.com. It has brought me so much joy and wonderful memories over the past 4 years, I can’t imagine being without it.
Where do you go for good ideas? Click around on Facebook – people in your network are always sharing links they find interesting. I like the website SpringWise.com – all about new, entrepreneurial ideas. Otherwise, Mashable.com is a great resource for social media trends and innovations. And of course, Pinterest.com is a pretty place to find inspiration.
Last song you downloaded: Can’t remember the last time I downloaded a song – I usually stream on Youtube.
What are you obsessed with right now? My dog Teddy – he is a 2 year old Pomeranian. I recently adopted him from the local rescue agency, Pamela’s Dogs (http://www.pamelasdogs.com). She specializes in rescuing small dogs from kill shelters in California – perfect sized pets for downtown living, and you’ll be a hero for giving a dog a second chance.
